Here in Chicago it is EXTREMELY important to have something productive and safe for children and teens to do all day. If and when this doesn't happen the results are very bad. Chicago has the highest murder rate in the country, this is due to no after-school activities in high risk neighborhoods; the only after-school activities there are gangs and drugs. Violence results from gangs and drugs. If these neighborhoods all had YMCAs and other programs there would be a large decrease in crime. Regards! Ah, the woes of teen laziness. I remember when the kids used to come inside whining, “mom, there’s nothing to do!” Then they would veg out in front of the television for hours until one day I had had enough. I told them to make a movie using the family camera and at first there were protests. Eventually the kids went ahead and started making a movie and after a good month and a half they finished. The movie was silly but fun to watch and my kids even told me that they had so much fun making it.

I also think encouraging physical play is another great idea and that’s a great tip you included in your article!

Getting kids involved with a particular activity might be easier if you can encourage some of their other friends to join or participate too. That way they have the encouragement from their peers to continue on.
