Right now many of us across the US are experiencing snow some not a normal thing, others this is a yearly thing so it is nothing new. Every year we often forget what we should keep in our car through out the winter. Especially those who work a lot and when home organizing these things drift out of our minds.
When leaving the house even if your going down the street a mile or two you should head out prepared. There is no reason not to be. I am not saying you have to rush out and get everything on the list below, most things we have in our homes. Creating a little kit should take no time at all to place in your trunk. Sliding off the road or an accident can happen any place. My Holiday wish is for each of you to return home save and sound, being prepared can help that wish come true.
Here is a list of things you should keep in your car during the winter months.
- Flashlights with extra batteries
- Stocked first aid kit
- Pocketknife
- Blanket or sleeping bag
- Mittens/gloves, socks, a wool cap, maybe a scarf if you don’t wear one regularly.
- Waterproof covering like a tarp or a poncho
- Three-pound coffee can, which can be used to heat water
- A small sack of sand or cat litter for generating traction under stuck wheels; it also adds weight to your vehicle
- A small shovel
- Bottled water (but remember it will probably freeze so allow expansion room in the container)
- Jumper cables
- Energy bars or other high-energy food like raisins or nuts
- Waterproof matches or a cigarette lighter
- Candles (a blanket over your head, body heat and the heat from a single candle can prevent freezing)
- Basic tool kit to include pliers, screwdrivers, adjustable wrench, tape and wire
- Paper towels or toilet tissue, good for their designed purpose as well as a fire starter
- Rope tow chain or a strap
- Signaling devices such as emergency flares or a mirror
- 3 lists of emergency numbers in order of who they should be called in case of an emergency. Not something we like to think about but its better to be prepared. 1 with your registration and insurance information, one in wallet, one in first aid kit. Listing your name and any health issues is a good idea as well.
- Change of clothes, If you are trying to get yourself unstuck you will get snow on you and end up wet as it drys. Or while you are waiting for help you may begin to get too cold layering can help keep you warm.
While I was watching the news the news lady mentioned having newspaper in the car to help with traction put it under the tires if you get stuck. I also heard that you can use roofing tiles if you have any laying around.
A lot of the items are probable common sense and probably already in your car, it is a good idea and check make sure everything is up to date and fresh. Be careful on the roads while they are slick and snowy.
Do you have any thing you keep in the car when your traveling during the winter months?

These are great points which are very urgent for winter season. Some hot things like coffee and dry fruits.
Nice list, you forgot to mention either a hand held battery-powered radio, police scanner and/or TV. This is to stay informed on weather conditions and what local authorities are doing to help you out. You also need a cell phone and maybe some hand/feet warmers to generate heat. Either way, if you have half of what is listed above you should be good for at least a day stranded somewhere… Be careful and stay warm.
These are great tips! It is very important to be safe and have the needed items just in case.

I keep a wind up flashlight with me wherever I go. That way, I don’t need to worry about the batteries dying on me. And in a pinch, it can also charge a mobile phone so I can make an emergency call.
