Personal Trainer: Cooking ~ Game for Nintendo DS

Personal Trainer Cooking This game was on my Christmas list, and Ned so sweetly got it for me. I wanted it based on the different commercials that I seen that is all I really knew about it. I heard about the Personal trainer ‘games’ before, just never put that much thought in to them. Until I seen these moms and kids cooking with the Personal Trainer: Cooking. I know ads are meant to make you want and buy their products.

Well I had it for a few weeks before really taking a look at it. Last week the menu plan was all set, however some things looked yummy so I added them to the menu plan for this week, which I forgot to post here. One thing I love about it is you can take it with you to the store which you can’t really do with a computer for the shopping list. It not only makes the shopping list for you it has pictures of everything and describes what it does. There is also an option on there that you can find substitute ingredients. Say if you don’t eat that type of product or if your at the store and can’t find that product anywhere. Like i was looking for potato starch, I just hit the substitute button and it gave me different options that I could use.

OK along comes Monday, Chicken Pot pie was on the menu, I turned it on and it tells you Step by step how and what to do out loud so you can hear it not only read it. For me this is a huge help sometimes you get stuff on your hands need a towel around to wipe hands to read it. Things went pretty smooth, I did something wrong the chicken pot pie was not near as good as it could have been. I don’t think I let it simmer as long as I should have.

Here comes Tuesday, Menu was sweet and sour pork, chow mein and pot stickers. All from the Personal Trainer: Cooking It went pretty well Now it was a little difficult popping from recipe to recipe to make sure everything ended about the same time. And it did take a while since I didn’t do any of the prep work earlier. So it was a lot of dicing of veggies and things. I Did manage to get the pork finished the night before. since I knew the chopping would take time and I didn’t want to have to change cutting boards and knifes and all of that. Dinner was Yummy. All four of the kids ate more then one helping which here for us is a sign of a good meal.

The Chinese I will do again. The chicken pot pie I will try again since I am pretty sure of where I went wrong. and it was edible. The kids did like it it was me who wasn’t completely satisfied.

A few things I don’t care for.(None of these would make me not recommend it Just want to make sure others know about this)

  • The sensitivity of the mic. sometimes while chopping it would go to the next step. Or sometimes it would go back instead of continue. So still have to keep a towel to dry hands just in case is a good idea if you need to push the buttons. There may be settings for this I’m not sure.
  • The speed of his voice can be to fast sometimes.
  • The volume would go up and down. I had the DS up as loud as it would go, his voice would get soft sometimes. Not sure of that is a game thing or something with my DS.
  • The Shopping list only holds 25 things. So if your making a few things it may be necessary to use the list if ingredients instead of the shopping list option. It made it a little hard while shopping.

I love to cook and know how to cook a lot of things and still found this game really useful. DS was helping me and it was simple enough for him to understand. I think this is a good choice for beginner and intermediate cookers. Experienced maybe they may get bored with it.

  2. Thanks for sharing this. I have heard about this and now it gives me another reason to pick up my DS. Someone give it to me but I was hooked on Wii fit and never really used the DS. But since I love to cook and enjoy finding good recipes I will give it a try. Thanks

  3. Good to read your review…I’ve been toying with getting a DS for hubby and I …and I’ve seen this game and heard lots about it in general…but not a review!

I have this cartridge as well (didnt want to say game). I have had it for about 4 months now. I did use it a few times at the start but I haven’t used it for a month now.
I too had problems with the mic, I think that the Nintendo DS mic just isn’t a good quality enough to recognise your voice properly.
    The recipes look good though
