I totally love the genuine imagination of little kids. It comes so easy at least with mine. This makes coming up with activities easy but on the other had not so easy. My daughter can sit on the other side of the room for hours and create fun things for her to do.
Children have great imaginations. Give them a pile of toys on their birthday, and if they’re very imaginative, they’ll play with the boxes more than the toys themselves. You can encourage this creativity by using imagination games. How about a teddy bear’s picnic?
What’s a teddy bear’s picnic? Actually there was a children’s song by that title written in 1907 by John Walter Bratton. Lyrics were added in 1932 by songwriter Jimmy Kennedy. The song is still recorded and used on children’s albums today.
A teddy bear’s picnic, however, often has nothing to do with the song. Preschools, kindergartens, and libraries around the country often have teddy bear picnics for young children. These picnics are often geared toward 3-8 year olds.
Your child doesn’t have to be in school to have a teddy bear picnic. Sit down with your child and decide when would be the best time for their picnic. If you plan on having the picnic outside, you’ll want to wait for warmer weather. This will give you ample time to plan as well.
Help your young children design and make invitations to send to their friends’ teddy bears. (The owner will be invited, too, of course.) Don’t forget to request an RSVP so you’ll know how many to prepare for. You can use this picnic as an excuse to help your child with their penmanship, learn how to properly write an invitation, and encourage them to use social skills.
Be sure to have your child help plan the menu for the picnic. You could have small sandwiches, neat ones to keep the teddy bear’s paws clean, a dessert like cupcakes, and drinks. If you happen to think about it, see if you can buy tableware – table cloth, napkins, plates, and cups – with a teddy bear theme. Teddy bear cookies or graham crackers would also be good idea in keeping with the theme of the picnic.
You can set up a blanket on your lawn for the teddy bears to have their picnic. Nearby you can set up a small table or larger blanket for the teddy bears’ owners to enjoy their own party.
Consider having games that your children can play with their teddy bears. Teddy bear hide-and-seek is one option – one child hides all of the bears and the others try to find them.
Of course you can go all out with the teddy bear’s picnic, or you can plan a simple get-together for your young children and their friends. Take advantage of the time when your children will enjoy their picnic. Ask the moms to stick around and enjoy some “mom time,” too.
You and your child can enjoy using their imagination when planning and hosting their picnic. With a little help, your child, their friends, and their friends’ teddy bears can enjoy an afternoon in the sun. Encourage them to thank their guests for coming to the teddy bear picnic.
This is a great idea
Great idea!My mum, don’t do that for me as I believed she felt weird with adults doing such things with their kids.
They say imagination is more powerful than knowledge. Its the imagination of our ancestors that created today’s fairy tales. Great Idea! Thanks!

Kids games like this help develop a child’s social skills – how to participate in games and play nicely. This one makes a good birthday party games idea.
Great article, I have a 5,6 and 17 year old and their all into video’s and TV and a lot of it is out faults as parents because we use the games and TV as a baby sitter. Our situation forces us to work longer hours than we like to keep up with the bills which I’m sure is common in a lot of households and that takes a lot of time away from the children. My wife is very innovative with the little ones but the 17 year is much harder to get her going. Thanks for the tips!
My sister used to make me attend things like this with her dolls. I guess since I’m older now I can admit it was kind of fun haha.
Hi there,
These games are absolutely necessary to develop potential skills, and bring the positive values. I think this is one of the nicest tips that I have heard so far.
Thanks gain

you had me at teddy bear picnic!
This is exactly what I expected to find out after reading the title Imagination Games. Thanks for informative article
I wish I played those games when I was a kid. I will try it out with my kids.
I love this idea for the same reason that I prefer live theater of TV. Ever seen a child’s face while watching TV – zombie? Ever see a child’s face while watching live theatre?
Nurture that imagination!

love all the above comments, some real good feedback here.
Research has shown that children playing imaginary games or with imaginary companions have an advantage in language development and they are more likely to score better later in life both socially and emotionally. They tend to retain knowledge faster than children without them. This is probably due to the fact that they either get more linguistic practice conversing with their imaginary friends or the opportunity to practice the adult roles in their imaginary games.
Toys that challenge kids imagination and creativity are toys that can teach them new skills. Further more playtime will be different each time.
I remember being imaginative as a child as well. I don’t think I wanted a lot of toys, I would have been happy with a cardboard box – I used to be quite creative!
We were fond of drawing cute little dollies on cardboards and cutting them off to make paper dolls. My mom would do the cutting and we’d do the coloring. We had so much fun on designing the different clothes that our dolls will wear. Yup, there were no barbies yet at that time–or my mom hid them to us because they’re pricey. Anyway, our paper dolls were a lot of fun
