Home From So Cal

Well it was a busy evening but we finally got home safe and sound in Washington.

We got on the plane all was smooth, took off early and everything.  We arrived in Seattle a little early.  Went potty then headed to the other plane stopping for dinner on the way.  Brendan left his flute in the bathroom so we had to run all the way back to where we started.   Finally got back to where we needed to get on the plane they were  boarding I wanted something to drink since I know that beverage service wouldnt be for at least 30 minutes and I was totally thirsty.  Got on the plane seatbelted in all ready to go.

Over the intercom we hear the pilot ‘While refueling they found something that may be wrong we will see if we can figure it out and fix it in the next few minutes’  Well this went on for about 30 minutes.  Brendan crashed hard.  They said that it would take a lot longer then a few minutes so they told us to get off the plane.  So wake him up and collect everything.  We get out and they tell us there are two more flights tonight going to Spokane and they are rebooking us on those then everyone ran to the special services desk I took my time figured why rush.   We got to the front got our boarding passes and $25 off our next flight.  And was told we had 8 minutes but it wasnt that far I wasnt to worried.  Stopping again to get something to drink.  Airports are hot places.

Got on the plane and headed home. I was glad I got something to drink the last time since there was no beverage service since with the tail wind it only took us 30 minutes to get there once we were up :)

Landed got off the plane  it was hard since Brendan was sleepy and slow.  We walked out Becky seen me and wanted to run and get me but it was through security so that was a no go when I got there I got the best hugs ever.  It was wonderful.   And my baggage was there I didn’t have any idea if it would be or not since the move planes.

Got home and crashed hard.  I am So glad to be home.  This trip was not fun with the planes.   Not sure if it was the airline or just bad luck.  I am thinking bad luck :)

I have been flying back and forth between San Diego and Phoenix since October — generally once a month I head back to visit friends in Phoenix who have my critters (2 Giant Schnauzers and 2 parrots) while I work this contract job in SD and stay in a downtown condo. Flying is certainly not the enjoyable thing it was 30 years ago. I’ve come to view it as something akin to the 16 years I spent commuting one hour each way to work on the commuter train — you have to endure it, so figure out what level of comfort you can survive with and then make it happen. I generally try to zone out.

I’ve been flying Southwest because I discovered early on that their planes have more leg room and I have long legs. Why crunch myself if I have an alternative. While their lack of assigned seating bothers some, they have updated their methods and it works well. I make sure I print out my boarding pass the day before so I can board relatively early in the process and generally am able to get a seat in which I feel comfortable.

I take very little back and forth with me other then my laptop and cameras. Keeping basics on both ends is a bit more expensive, but less effort on my part when I travel.

The airport in Phoenix is much nicer, more accommodating and easier to negotiate then the San Diego Airport (where airport authorities have spent years fighting to get a new airport and I’m convinced they make life as uncomfortable for travelers as possible in an effort to support their viewpoint!). So I have learned to give myself much more time in San Diego (whether going or coming) and to put as much on wheels as I can just to make it less stressful.

In the end, air travel is no longer fun. As with anything, it comes down to my own personal mindset. If I determine all will be well and roll with the punches I survive relatively unscathed. Otherwise, it becomes torture. Sounds like you and I have similar means of dealing with things. Glad you had a safe trip home and managed to retrieve the flute too!!
