Today, perhaps more than ever before, spending quality time with our families is important. It seems like adults and kids alike have impossibly busy lives, and we just don’t keep up with one another like we once did. So when we do get a moment to spend together, we want to get as much out of it as possible.
One way to do so is by having family workouts. You’ll get to catch up with the kids and spouse while doing something that is good for all of you. Children tend to pick up the habits of their parents, so by exercising with them, you make it more likely that they will exercise on their own now and in the years to come.
Going to the Gym
A growing number of gyms have family plans that you can take advantage of. They may offer free or reduced memberships for children and teens when they are accompanied by a parent. Some even offer special classes and programs that are geared toward families, providing a fun and beneficial workout for both parents and kids.
Even those with infants and toddlers can work out as a family. Many gyms offer “Mommy and Me” or “Daddy and Me” classes that are designed for parents of the very young. Although the parent usually does most or all of the exercise, trainers often play music or lead parents in singing songs that appeal to babies and young children. This keeps them occupied and associates positive feelings with working out that will benefit them in the future.
Exercise Plans
If the gym isn’t within your budget or just doesn’t interest you, you can still get a great workout with your family. You can find resources online that offer workout plans for families. Or you can come up with your own family workout plan.
An important thing to remember when planning workouts for the family is to not make them seem like workouts. There are lots of fun things you can do together that promote fitness. You could designate one evening each week as family basketball night and shoot hoops together for 30 minutes to an hour. In the summer, hiking and swimming are good family activities. Choose these and other things your kids enjoy, and they won’t groan when you say it’s time to work out.
Working out as a family is good for everyone involved. It helps parents get in some physical activity without taking away time spent with the kids. It gets kids up off the couch and teaches them that exercise is important, and it can also be fun. By making family workouts a part of your normal routine, you can enjoy one another’s company and improve the entire family’s health at the same time.
My husband is about to have a wrist surgery in a few weeks and it was recommended to us that he should start swimming to build up the strength in the wrist beforehand. So we’ve been swimming together every day. It’s been great. I prefer actual outdoor activities as opposed to going to the gym, but that’s not always feasible, so the gym is convenient sometimes too, esp during the winter.
I like how you posted about trying to make the kids not think it’s an actual workout. I think it is best to just take them outside and play whiffle ball in the yard and have them run around. Always make it a game for the kids. Kids always enjoy stuff like that.

While I don’t like video games the one exception has been the Wii. My husband got the Wii Fit for my birthday but I don’t use it much because I prefer the gym. My gym doesn’t have a kids area so they can’t come with me. The Wii Fit has been a fun thing for the kids to do and get some exercise too. My little boy loves the running and aerobics. But I do agree with the above post, just get outside and play.
It will be a great idea to spend some time with the family. Swimming, playing badminton, football will be some good work outs for them. They will also enjoy the game with their parents.
great advise, thanks.
I think it is so important to teach you children good habits at an early age and exercise is defiantly one of them.
